Where to live on Oahu?
I have read a lot about racism in Hawaii if you are a Haole? I am portuguese, my entire family came from portugal, settled in Hawaii, Oahu. Lisbon, and the Azores. My parents came to California and I was born here, my mother, her mother, father, their parents and so on settled in HI. One chartered page, the other side was sent to ellis island before settling in HI. Now, my question, I still have family their. I have olive skin. Would I be welcomed? (except by family). Or will I suffer the same racial slurs as mainlanders? I have been many times, I have never been treated poorly, I have been treated like family. When the locals know my family is from hawaii, I am called cuz and welcomed with hugs. Now, living there is a different story than visiting. So, I would appreciate an feedback, from Locals, Native Hawaiians. As well as those transplants from the mainland. I plan on having family take me to look for a place to live, however, my niece's mother is white and is from the sacramento area and I am from the bay area. I have grown up with many cultures, I am comfortable I grew up with portuguese, samoan, hispanic of all races, african american, Filipino, well, like I said, many races. She however, grew up in a cow town and pretty much all white. I wonder, who will have the biggest problem moving there. Me or her? Would I be considered and or called a Haole? Each time I have visited, I have been asked if I was from there. Now could that have been for tips? Or were they serious? I was not sporting 5 cameras around my neck..lol..anyway. I may be babbling and joking a little. But I do know, by what family has to say, is that there are some who do NOT welcome Haole's. And some locals who will not just rob you, but may kill you. That is anywhere you go...but, my husband is a little skittish about moving, and I am a little worried about my niece. Her Mother is not heading my advice, to stay on the military base where I know she will be safe. But then again, my niece would learn about her family and her history, if she went to school with the local children. She is Portuguese as well. Her skin is pale, but, so was my Grandmother and she was full blooded Portuguese, my grandfather, olive. I take after that side. I have dark hair, dark eyes, and olive skin. BTW, my cuz was in the Miss America I think 2007....I believe she won the talent competition.. Throwin that out there, just because...:) We come from beautiful family...
