How scary has our world become that it is socially acceptable to be suicidal?

I'm in my early 30's and I don't really know too much about this. When I was in high school there were a few people who were depressed and cut themselves, but they didn't have a name for them, they just had problems. I also don't understand why anyone would want to put a label on cutting and depression. You know, if you're depressed, you're depressed. Why do we have to put a name to it and all dress alike. It kinda reminds me of the "non-conformists" at my high school in the early 90's. Ironically, they all dressed alike and had the same hair color(black) and hairstyle, listened to the same music,etc. Yeah OK, that's non-conformity. Silly people.
