Why dont we see objects closer and closer together the further we look back in time towards the big bang event?

Please help me resolve this paradox. Imagine a Hubble deep field looking in opposite directions each out to 13 billion Light Years. Galaxies in each extremity are 26 billion LY apart. However, 13 Billion years ago objects were closer together, the big bang having only just occurred.
